Set in the heart of Kent, the beautiful surroundings of Sutton Valence School have been inspiring pupils since 1576. Our greatest strength is our community. Staff, pupils and parents enjoy a mutual respect and kinship that allows each individual to embark on a unique educational journey; a journey fuelled by self-confidence, hard work and high academic standards.
Mr James A Thomas MA (Cantab) MA (London) NPQH
In his early career he was a Head of Department (Theology and Philosophy) at both Dulwich College and Wellington College, where he was also in charge of Oxford and Cambridge applications. He then became the Director of Studies at Harrow International School Hong Kong before moving to the highly regarded British School in Tokyo where most recently he was Headmaster of the Secondary School. Following seven years in Japan, he decided it was time to come back to the UK, where he currently holds the position of Headmaster at Sutton Valence School.
Beyond work, Mr Thomas enjoys spending time with his wife, three children and faithful old Labrador. His personal interests include music, choirs, sport, travel and current affairs.
Through the high expectations and standards we set, all our young people are encouraged and helped to go further than they had thought possible in their academic, co-curricular, community and leadership journeys. We want them to become confident, civilised, tolerant and open-minded individuals who possess a love of learning and a strong sense of self-discipline along with a set of values reflecting our principles as a Christian Foundation.
Each will have taken a slightly different journey by the time they finish their School education, but our ultimate destinations for all are the same: that they will work hard to fulfil their true potential and add value to their lives.
Academic attainment is important, but this is only one part of what makes a child successful in life. Every pupil has the opportunity to play a musical instrument, perform on stage, enjoy the creative arts and play a variety of sports, at the level that best suits their interest and ability.
One of our greatest strengths is our community; the relationships enjoyed between staff, pupils and parents are exemplary. The House system fosters the School’s family atmosphere and friendly House competitions provide opportunities for every child to contribute and be applauded for their efforts.
